I’m Haylee – I’m a Melbourne Breakfast tea addict; and, a female solo traveller hoping to see as much as the world as I can. Since, you’re here hoping, that since you’re here, I can inspire you to do the same!
Over the years, I’ve made memories and had experiences around the world. I’ve been stuck in a polar vortex in Upstate New York. I’ve swam with Whale Sharks in Western Australia. I’ve been covered from head-to-toe in colourful dust during Holi celebrations in India. I blistered my feet so badly running down stairs in Santorini that I couldn’t walk for two days. I’ve camped in the Serengeti with no barriers between the animals and my tent. I’ve mastered the art of getting on the tube during peak hour while living in London. I’ve lived on four different continents and travelled to over 40 countries (majority of them solo).
As a once painfully shy person, it was a surprise to those who knew me that after leaving high school much of my life took place overseas. At 19-years-old, I moved to New York where I studied and then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Rhetoric.
After graduating, I spent the next five years exploring as much of the world as I could: I spent four months backpacking on my first big solo trip through Europe; several shorter overseas solo trips; completed an internship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; made a spontaneous move to London following a 7-week solo trip to Morocco and Egypt; and spent some time living in Melbourne. It’s wild to think that all of these things were done by that same girl that was once a very shy person in my younger years.
It was during my time studying abroad that this blog was born as an outlet for two of my greatest passions – travel and writing.
“Away with Wonder”, reflects the curiosity I have for exploring unfamiliar places and rediscovering where I’ve been before. As someone who thrives when I’m travelling, I also hope for this to be a place to be a resource for people who may be shy and feel intimidated by travelling solo. I hope that my experiences as someone who was incredibly shy can show how much growth travel has the possibility to bring them if they can find the courage to just go.
I’m all about bucket list experiences, visiting hotspot destinations and uncovering lesser-known places. I enjoy a mix of typically touristy activities and off-the-beaten-path experiences. If any of this resonates with you, you’re in the right place. On this blog, I’ll be sharing my best travel hacks and tips for destinations, solo travellers and shy travellers. I share tips, guides and itineraries for cities and towns that I’ve explored solo, as well as reviews and summaries of group tours I’ve taken.
