One of the prettiest sights during early spring is the bright yellow canola fields in York. If you’re a nature lover, enjoy photography or you’re just after a day away from the city, then you won’t want to miss York’s seasonal blooms because they’re only flower for around four weeks each year.

In this post, I’ll be sharing everything you need to know for a day trip from Perth to see the stunning canola fields in York. From the best time to visit and tips for exploring PetTeet Park to advice on how to get there from Perth CBD, I’ve got you covered.

About canola season in York

The canola season in Western Australia runs for around one month each year, generally in September. York, also one of Western Australia’s oldest inland towns, is one of the best places in the state to see the canola fields.

Where to find the canola fields in York

The best places to see the canola fields are along the roads leading into York. Two roads that offer some of the best views over the canola fields are Great Southern Highway and Qualen Road. While you can view the canola fields from a distance along these roads, you cannot access through these canola fields. If you would like to take photos and get up closer to the canola flowers, the best place to visit is PetTeet Park – which is just outside of York.

Details on visiting the canola fields at PetTeet Park

Opening Hours

PetTeet Park is open on weekends only during the 2024 season. The park opens at 10am and closes at 4pm, with the last entry at 3.30pm.

Important: The last weekend for seeing the canola fields at PetTeet Park is the 5th and 6th of October 2024.

Location

The address for PetTeet Park that you’re going to want to put into your GPS or maps app is 1625 Qualen West Road, Gilgering, Western Australia 6302.

Cost

There are entry fees to enter PetTeet Park. The entry fee for adults aged between 18 – 89 years old is $20 per person.

Please note: PetTeet Park only accepts cash for entry fees. Don’t forget to bring the appropriate amount of cash with you.

Facilities

Food and drinks
PetTeet Park has food and drinks available for purchase – as well as tables and chairs to relax. All purchases must be made in cash only.

Public restrooms
There are bathrooms available for visitor use onsite at the park.

PetTeet Park tend to post updates via their Instagram page so if you’re planning a trip, it’s a good idea to follow along and check for any updates on the day you plan to visit.

Important things to know before you visit the canola fields

Bring cash

Everything at PetTeet Park needs to be paid for in cash – including your entry fee so be sure to bring enough for that, as well as any snacks or drinks you might like to purchase. There’s no ATM close by so be sure to grab cash before you leave or stop in somewhere on your way.

There’s lots of bees

There are SO many bees in the canola fields. If you’re allergic or feel uneasy around bees, it’s definitely something to keep in mind before planning your visit.

Respect property boundaries

Unlike PetTeet Park, most canola fields are not open to the public. It’s is incredibly important to respect property boundaries and avoid walking into the fields or jumping over fences, as these are working farms and people’s livelihoods.

Phone signal

PetTeet Park is located in a little valley, which means you may loose your phone signal upon arrival. This is great for disconnecting and simply enjoying the canola fields, however, just be prepared that you’ve got directions of where you’re going when it’s time to leave.

Getting to canola fields in York from Perth CBD

By car

Driving is the best option for this day trip. From Perth CBD, the drive to York, or more specifically PetTeet Park, is approximately 1.5 – 2 hours by car. View the map on Google here. If you don’t have a car and would like to hire one for the day, you can see options here.

By coach and taxi

There are limited public transport in this region. However, you can get to York by train (or coach, if the train lines are not in service). You can find available options on the TransWA website here, but bear in mind there are only a handful of services each day. The train service to York departs from and arrives back at the following terminals: East Perth Terminal, Armadale, Cockburn, Joondalup and Midland. But coach services to York only depart from and arrives back at East Perth Terminal.

Once you arrive in York, you can take a taxi to PetTeet Park, which is approximately a 20-minute drive.

What to see & do in York

York is one of Western Australia’s oldest inland towns and it’s also an extremely charming town to wander through. With heritage buildings and museums to seasonal festivals and nature walks, here’s how you can spend the rest of your day in York:

  • Visit York’s historical and heritage buildings, including York Town Hall, York Courthouse Complex and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
  • Check out one of York’s museums, including York Motor Museum and York Residency Museum.
  • You can venture out to the Mount Brown Lookout for views over York and the Avon Valley.
  • York often hosts festivals, fairs and other events. You can check out what’s on when you plan to visit here.
  • Walk across the Suspension Bridge and take in views over the Avon River.

Where to eat in York

After you’ve been to the canola fields and PetTeet Park or you’ve spent the morning wandering around York, you might want to grab a bite to eat in York (which is about a 20-minutes drive if you’re coming from the park). There are a few options to have lunch in York, here are two recommendations:

  • Settlers House York (83 Avon Terrace, York WA)
  • Imperial Homestead (125 Avon Terrace, York WA)

Just after a coffee? Botanicalia (located at 152 Avon Terrace) is a great local spot for coffee. They even sell cakes and small eats.
