Little Nuan Nuan is Malaysia’s newest pride and joy – and cutest attraction. The giant panda cub was brought into the world in 2015 by parents Xing Xing and Liang Liang at Malaysia’s Zoo Negara.
The giant panda parents were loaned to Malaysia by China in May 2014, as a gift to signify the 40-year diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
The birth of baby Nuan Nuan put Malaysia on the map for panda conservation and set a new world record with Xing Xing and Liang Liang becoming the first pandas in captivity to naturally conceive in such a short period of time.
The little female cub was named through a competition, where over 20, 000 suggestions were given by the Malaysian public. The name “Nuan Nuan”, which means ‘warm’ and ‘friendliness’ in Mandarin, was chosen to further exemplify the relationship between Malaysia and China.
Nuan Nuan turned one year old on the 18th August 2016 and will be returned to China on her next birthday when she turns two years old, as per the agreement between the two countries.
According to The Sun Daily, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar confirmed that even though the panda cub was born in Malaysia, she belongs to China.
While parents Xing Xing and Liang Liang will reside in Malaysia’s Zoo Negara for another eight years, little Nuan Nuan will be relocated to her parent’s hometown in Chengdu in late 2017.
If you wish to see this cheeky little cub while she’s in Kuala Lumpur, Zoo Negara is open daily between 9 am to 5 pm. The Zoo is located at Hulu Kelang, 68000 Ampang, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia. For further details, you can contact the zoo by phone +603-4108 3422.
